Guilford County Animal Shelter needs the following volunteers. Training provided; call for dates.

(F) Foster animal parents. Provide a temporary home (1-10 weeks) for kittens and puppies too young to be adopted, injured animals, or mother nursing young. Requires an interview with the agency. Minimum age 18.

(F) Pet education and therapy. Take shelter animal to local schools or other groups of young people for education program to increase awareness of responsible pet ownership. Also take animals to local nursing and retirement homes to increase social interaction and exercise with seniors. Must have own transportation. Minimum age 18.

(F) Buddy Club member. Become a buddy to four shelter pets. Walk, groom, and train animals and bring them special treats. One to four times a month. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

(F) Adoption fair assistant. Help place dogs in permanent adoptive homes. Adoption fairs are held every Saturday at the PetSmart on Bridford Parkway and every Sunday at the PetSmart on Lawndale Avenue. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Happy Hills Animal Foundation needs volunteers to:

(F,W) Maintain a database of volunteers for the agency and notify them of upcoming events. Coordinate volunteers to make sure that events are staffed. Recognize outstanding volunteers for agency newsletter and annual recognition program.

(F,W) Organize and carry out fundraisers. Staff has identified many ideas, but needs help executing projects. Minimum age 18.

(F,W) Provide foster homes for kittens, cats, puppies, and dogs. Long and short-term care. Training provided.

(F,W) Transport animals to vet offices for routine care and to the airport as animals travel to their new homes. Daily need. Minimum age 18.

(F,W ) Perform clerical duties, including folding and addressing newsletters; completing and mailing tax receipts and thank you notes; copying; filing; and answering phones.

(F,W) Train and groom animals. Basic training for dogs including sit, lie down, and off commands and leash training. Groom cats and dogs, and maintain animal quarters including cleaning cages and litter boxes and cleaning up large runs and fields. No experience required; some training provided. Minimum age 13.
