Triad Alternatives for Change

Back Together Again, a nonprofit agency in Greensboro, is offering Triad Alternatives for Change, a program that allows first-time offenders an opportunity to evaluate themselves and their needs in the community and to build confidence and self-esteem.

Subjects include communication and social skills, anger management and conflict resolution, and exploratory/journal writing. Classes are limitd to 15-20 people.

Adult Center for Enrichment. Pick up and return lunch trays from the cafeterias at its adult day center and socialize with seniors. Training provided. Minimum age 16.

Animal Rescue & Foster Program. Vaious volunteer duties including:

Assist rescue and adoption teams by returning phone calls and screening callers.

Bring pets area nursing and retirement homes to visit residents four times a month.

Hold puppies and dogs at adoption events.

Write for the newsletter.

Serve as foster homes for animals.

Play with and clean up after kittens housed temporarily at the agency.

Back Together Again. Helps low-income families become more self-sufficient.

Answer the telephone, filing, and making phone calls.

Staff the Greensboro Coliseum food concession stand during special events. Part of proceeds from concessions benefits agency. No heavy lifting, No more than five hours per event.

(F) City of Greensboro needs volunteers to help in the Drain Marker Program to keep streams and lakes clean. Volunteers will glue drain markers on the concrete covers of storm drains and on curbsides using a caulk gun. Must be comfortable working outdoors in all kinds of weather, have own transportation, and sign liability form. Good project for groups. One volunteer in each group must be an adult. Training provided. Minimum age 12.

Court Watch of NC. Attend domestic violence court trials and monitor proceedings. Volunteers needed in Greensboro, High Point, Asheboro, Lexington, and Wentworth. Training provided. Parking and out-of-town mileage reimbursed. Minimum age 18.

Goodwill Industries. Various volunteer jobs including:

Assist with day-to-day operations in retail stores and in the transportation department. Duties include greeting customers, receiving goods, and processing donations. Requires light to moderate lifting and friendly communication. On the job training provided as necessary.

Assist the transportation department as truck helper and Attended Donation Site attendant. Duties include assisting the driver in handling materials and loading and unloading trucks. ADC attendant will greet customers, collect donations, and issue receipts.

Assist in the production department/contributed goods. Duties include sorting and inspecting goods for sale in retail stores and determining those for salvage sites.

Assist in employment works area. Duties include working on the computer and helping Goodwill clients write resumes and polish interviewing skills. Requires basic computer skills, good communication, and experience in resume writing.

Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteer att ReStore, a recycling center accepting donations of new and used building materials, fixtures, furniture, tools, and other surplus items. ReStore is open Tuesdays through Saturdays. Volunteers will pick up, fix, and clean donated items, operate the cash register, assist customers, answer phones, and work in the warehouse.

Help build low-income houses. Volunteers are needed on weekdays and on Saturdays. Construction projects including framing, roofing, painting, and siding. Individuals, churches, and civic groups are invited to participate.

Emergency Department. Volunteers needed to help minimize the anxiety of waiting families by providing regular patient updates. Training provided.

Patient Discharge. Volunteers needed to discharge patients via wheelchairs. Training provided.

Horsepower Therapeutic Learning Center. Serve as volunteer horse leaders and sidewakers for its youth and therapeutic riding programs. Leaders are responsible for controlling the horse during sessions. Sidewalkers are responsible for riders.Training provided.

Mental Health Association in Greensboro needs:

Volunteers to befriend an adult receiving mental and emotional health services. Volunteers who choose one-on-one friendships must be at least 18 and make a minimum commitment of four hours a month for a year. Volunteers who choose to be matched with group residents must make a commitment of two hours week for one semester.

People to join the agencys speakers bureau, provide general office assistance, or help with special projects including the agencys free information and referral service.

Project Linus - Guilford County Chapter.
Group members make new, washable blankets for children who have been traumatized or are otherwise in need. Blankets may be crocheted, knitted, quilted, or fleece no-sews. Special events benefit community facilities that care for children.
